Hydropack Irrigation

Extensive green roof systems establish plant cover that will (after reaching a minimum of 80% plant coverage) maintain itself almost autonomously with little or no need for artificial watering. The main plants used in our systems are succulent plants from the crassulaceae family (especially sedum), which require little water. However, in certain conditions (determined by factors such as the project location and the presence of semi-intensive vegetation and/or pitched roofs) it may be necessary to supplement the natural rainfall with a rooftop watering system.

When Should a Watering System be Installed?

The rainfall profile – and in particular the local rainfall frequency – is a key factor in the decision of whether or not to install an automatic watering system. HYDROPACK is designed with dedicated water reservoirs to maximize rainwater retention and minimize both irrigation and weight. In many regions, HYDROPACK trays that use the STANDARD PLANT MIX plant cover do not require additional watering except in the event of an extended drought or sustained high temperatures.

Our HYDROPACK trays with the STANDARD PLANT MIX do very well without irrigation in the following regions: Midwest, New England, Mid-Atlantic, Appalachian Highlands, and Northern Pacific Coast. Outside of these regions, a case-by-case study is required to determine the need of permanent irrigation.

A temporary irrigation system might be necessary for the summer months some years.

For any sloped application above 15%, a permanent irrigation is required.

What is the Most Important thing to Remember about Irrigation?

When designing a green roof, it is crucial to design a system with water access on the roof with at least 34 psi in order to be able to water the roof in case of an extended period of drought.
